Francisco de Sousa
Oriente Conquistado A Jesu Christo Pelos Padres Da Companhia De Jesus Da Provincia De Goa
Lisboa, Na Officina Valentim Da Costa Deslandes. 1710

2 volumes. In folio. Binding: replica of contemporary flexible vellum. Title pages of each volume are two-color printings. Illustrated with 4 engravings. Father Francisco de Sousa was appointed by the Company of Jesus, in Rome, as chronicler and responsible to write the biography of Saint Francis Xavier. Francis Xavier had great esteem for the Portuguese, especially those who accompanied him in his epic journey, such as Fernão Mendes Pinto, and so it did not made sense to write the work in a language other than Portuguese. Francisco de Sousa produced a vast work, concrete, of universal understanding, a rich source of information with great literary value, unique, systematic and fundamental to the history of European expansion in the East Coast of Africa and the Far East (China and specially Japan). Throughout the work he compares several societies and agricultural crops, with those in Brazil, where he was born. It contains information in important navigation trade and shipwrecks.
