8vo. pp. 87. Profusely illustrated throughout with wood-engravings by Schmied coloured by pochoir and heightened in gilt and argent. Full brown crushed morocco by G. Cretté after Schmied, signed in gilt to front turn-in: 'G. Cretté Succ. de Marius Michel d'après F. L. Schmied', front board with large decorative lacquered panel by Dunand after Schmied: 'Laque de R. Dunand F-L-Schmied', with their signatures, inset section of two tone light brown crushed morocco ruled in argent and additional inset section of green crushed morocco to front board, matching sections of green morocco to spine and rear board, title gilt to spine, brown suede doublures, marbled endpapers, original publisher's printed wrappers and backstrip preserved, a.e.g., matching morocco-backed gilt-speckled board chemise and matching slipcase.

[PROVENANCE: From the collection of D[aniel]. Zierer, the bibliophile and collector, with his bookplate to initial blank leaf. The bookplate was designed by Jules Chadel and bears the motto: 'Et Quasi Cursores Vitai Lampada Tradunt / Ex Libris D. Zierer' and bears the monogram of Chadel].

A magnificent copy of Schmied's Le Cantique des Cantiques in a lacquer binding designed by the artist.

From the edition limited to 110 numbered copies signed by Schmied on the justification in pencil, this copy extra-illustrated with an original gouache design by Schmied on card for the front board of the binding, two proof pages of pochoir illustration for the book and eleven pulls of the plates in black on japon paper, three of which are inscribed in pencil 'fumé / F. L. S.'.

This zenith of Art Deco illustration and printing was Schmied's masterpiece - he designed the illustration, the mise en page and the binding and printed the illustrations with the assistance of Pierre Bouchet.
